I am a native English speaker with 10 years of experience in academic writing and advanced training in biostatistics, genetics and epidemiology, including a PhD from the University of Cambridge. I have also previously worked as an editor on a number of student magazines at the University of Cambridge and have experience working with ESL (English as a second language) authors through my work as an ad hoc reviewer for scientific journals.

Overall, I have received advanced training in biostatistics, bioinformatics, genetics and reproductive toxicology.###Professional BackgroundI am an experienced reviewer of scientific publications written by ESL (English as a second language) authors. For example, as an ad hoc reviewer for the journal Reproductive Toxicology, I have often had to review articles written by authors whose first language is not English. In addition, I have considerable experience conducting literature-based systematic reviews of important scientific topics. In one project I had to review over 1000 publications, most of which were not written by native English speakers. As a result of these experiences, I am able to understand most ESL material in a quick and timely fashion, and am aware of many errors commonly committed by ESL writers. As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge, I worked on a number of scientific manuscripts on the relationship between lipoprotein(a) and risk of coronary heart disease and diabetes, recently submitted for peer review in academic journals.###PersonalIn my free time, I have worked as an editor on a number of student magazines, including the 'River Rat' (the student magazine of Darwin College at the University of Cambridge) and 'βluesci' (the University of Cambridge Science Magazine). As a copy editor on both magazines, my duties included the correcting of sentence structure, grammar, word choice and punctuation; fact checking; ensuring the smooth flow of sentences, conformity to in-house standards of English and consistent use of terminology. I also worked as a general editor on both magazines, with a responsibility for the overall structure, flow and readability of submitted articles. The work involved close collaboration with authors, working to tight deadlines and ensuring articles were appropriately targeted to their intended audience. I was also responsible for sourcing appropriate images to accompany printed articles in the ‘River Rat’ as well as the overall layout of the magazine, created in Adobe InDesign. Thus, I have gained substantive expertise in the areas of editing and science communication.
