专业对申请者背景要求：

应该有出色的量化分析能力和相关技术知识，如Python，更倾向于有相关工作经验的申请者。

共需4篇文书，包括两篇Essay，1篇Personal Statement，和1篇Statement of Purpose，接下来我们就来分析这4篇文书的要求以及侧重点是什么。

Essay 1: 

Business analytics requires a combination of mathematical/quantitative abilities and creative thinking. Describe a project you worked on, either as a student or professional, that demonstrates your analytical and creative problem- solving skills. Tell us why this project was interesting to you. (Maximum 750 words)

1）重点技能考察：

mathematical/quantitative abilities and creative thinking

数学/量化能力和创造性思维

analytical and creative problem- solving skills

分析能力和创造性解决问题能力（即用新的方式或角度看待一件事情或问题）

申请系统里也会要求填写相关的数学课程和计算机编程课程科目

2）隐藏技能考察：

学校要你描述一个项目、一件事、一个瞬间等，其实就是在考察讲故事的能力，这是每一个商学院学生的必备技能。

3）字数要求：

只能比要求的字数少，不能多。所以，内容体现上只呈现需要的，其他不相干的就不要了，招生官没有那么多时间来读。

这类问题，首先选择需要呈现的是一个完整的项目，对自己来说是印象深刻，题材选择具有代表性。第一能够叙述下去，第二能够通过具体的事例和数据，以及问题的解决和成果的呈现来证明自己的分析能力和创造性思维。

 Essay 2: 

Why does a career in business analytics appeal to you? Based on your abilities and what you know about careers in business analytics, why do you think this is the right career path for you? (Maximum 750 words)

1）明确主题：

实质就是职业“career”陈述，需要做到具体、有规划并且符合逻辑，同时要展现申请者的激情，让招生官看到你对这个行业和领域的真爱、你的能力足以令人信服、有能改变世界的潜力。值得注意的是，这个问题的更加侧重申请者的想要申请这个专业的激情“Passion”。

2）细化问题：

Based on your abilities and what you know about careers in business analytic

其实就是指你过去的相关的经验与所获得的能力对BA 职业选择的一个支持与理解，包括这个专业能够给你带来的优势或好处。

3）提取重点：

why do you think this is the right career path for you?

这其实学校已经先假定了一个前提，在众多的职业路径选择中，为什么你就偏偏选择BA这条道路，你需要作出符合逻辑的说明来使得招生官相信BA职业发展道路就是最适合你的。

4）结构组成：

一般涉及到职业问题，就需要具体化，让招生官看到你职业目标的可行性，而不是空谈。所以，可以简要的分为短期目标+长期目标。何为具体化，其实就类似于中文的扩句表达。

如一般学生在写职业目标会写成“毕业后，进公司”，这就是不具体的。接下来我们就在此基础上进行扩句，“（2年，从BA专业）毕业后，（我计划）进入（金融/商贸/投资等）公司（担任数据分析师/从事数据分析相关工作长达2年或更久，吸取相关经验）。XXX年之后，我将从事…这样呈现在招生官眼前就比较有具体参照物。

5）遵循原则（包括但不限于）：

• 你具体的职业目标或职业愿景是什么？

• 为什么？你的Motivation/passion是什么？

• 你现在已有的技能或知识是什么？（所做过相关的business/analytics工作）

• 你希望从这个项目中获得什么技能或知识？

• 你打算怎样利用这个项目的校内或校外资源？

 Personal Statement 

What is a Personal Statement and what is it used for?

The Personal Statement is an opportunity for you to provide additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. It will also be used to consider candidates for the Cota-Robles and Graduate Opportunity fellowships. Please respond to one or more of the following prompts. (up to 500 words in length, approximately 1-page, single spaced, using 1-inch margins and 12-point font)

1）重要性：

这份PS不仅是向招生官展现你的准备以及态度的机会，这是一个补充信息的机会，同时也可以作为Cota-Robles和研究生机会奖学金的评估素材，是十分重要的。

2）字数和各式要求：

字数要求最多500字，同时遵循单倍行距，1英寸边距和12磅字体，所有内容控制在一页内。需要严格按照所给要求书写内容。

3）所选内容：

根据学校提供的6大话题方面，任意选择其中1个或多个进行回答书写即可，不用全部都回答完。集中表达自己最擅长的，最能突出自己的一个良好形象。

问题如下：

【SOP里没提到的学术经历】

Are there educational, personal, cultural, economic, or social experiences, not described in your Statement of Purpose, that have shaped your academic journey? If so, how? Have any of these experiences provided unique perspective(s) that you would contribute to your program, field or profession? 

【所遇到的挑战或困难】

Describe challenge(s) or barriers that you have faced in your pursuit of higher education. What motivated you to persist, and how did you overcome them? What is the evidence of your persistence, progress or success?

【对underrepresented群体的共鸣、支持与帮助】

How have your life experiences and educational background informed your understanding of the barriers facing groups that are underrepresented in higher education? 

【在校期间怎样利用校园资源，融入校园社区】

How do you intend to engage in scholarly discourse, research, teaching, creative efforts, and/or community engagement during your graduate program that have the potential to advance diversity and equal opportunity in higher education?

【毕业后，能够为学校带来什么，体现多样性】

How do you see yourself contributing to diversity in your profession after you earn your advanced degree at UCLA?

针对一般学生来说，比较好写的话题，可以选择前两个，可以更具有故事性，更能展现个人形象。当然如果准备充分也可以选择其他话题进行准备。

4）注意此部分的PS所呈现的内容不能和Statement of Purpose (SOP)一样，否则SOP就没有意义了，也要避免出现过多内容与Essay 1和Essay 2重复。

因为招生官是想更加全面的了解你，而不是花时间阅读重复的内容。同时，在选择多个话题回答时，尽量选择相关性大一点的进行语言组织，这样不仅内容上充实，逻辑上也顺畅。

 Statement of Purpose 

What is the statement of purpose, and what is it used for?

The statement of purpose is an integral part of your application for graduate admission and consideration for merit- based financial support. It is used to understand your academic interests, and to evaluate your aptitude and preparation for graduate work, as well as your fit with the proposed program of study. It is also used to assess your ability to write coherent and convincing prose. You do not need to answer every question; focus on the elements that you feel are most relevant to your candidacy. (up to 500 words in length, approximately 1-page, single spaced, using 1-inch margins and 12-point font)

1）重要性：

SOP也是申请的一部分，同时也是学校考虑择优资助的一个重要参考材料，这就告知我们这篇SOP是有用的，不是多余的。

2）问题呈现：

What is your purpose in applying for graduate study in your specified degree program? Describe your area(s) of interest, including any subfield(s) or interdisciplinary interests.

【为所申请专业做了哪些相关的准备和成果，包括学术和相关经历等】

What experiences have prepared you for advanced study or research in this degree program? What relevant skills have you gained from these experiences? Have your experiences led to specific or tangible outcomes that would support your potential to contribute to this field (examples: performances, publications, presentations, awards or recognitions)?

What additional information about your past experience may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA? For example, you may wish to describe research, employment, teaching, service, artistic or international experiences through which you have developed skills in leadership, communication, project management, teamwork, or other areas.

选择与你最相关的方面进行书写，可以不用全部问题都回答。集中强调你的独特之处，在招生官面前树立个人形象。

特别注意，因为学校所提供的几个方面的问题，和Essay1，Essay2以及PS有重合的地方，尽量避免，选择其他不重复的内容进行书写，以便提供更多的信息给招生官，强化你在招生官面前树立的形象。

3）侧重点应该包含以下几点，所呈现这些内容的时候，同时也是招生官在考察你的写作表达能力。

• 你的学术兴趣点

• 你的才能和你为将来的研究生所做的准备

• 你和所申请专业的适配度

总结：

1、 以上4篇文书都需要严格遵守学校要求，包括字数和各式要求，4篇文书共同组成申请材料，缺一不可。

2、 商科方向的文书，良好的写作以及叙事能力十分重要，更能够在招生官面前树立饱满的个人形象。

3、 职业规划也是申请中不可或缺的一部分，并且占据十分重要的位置，不仅能让强化你申请此专业的目的，还能说服招生官你为什么要选择该职业作为你未来的职业目标发展道路，具有逻辑性。

4、 PS和SOP虽然在中文理解上大意差不多，但是实质是两个不同的文书。如果在一所学校同时要求两份文书，需要在内容上区别开，根据学校具体要求，突出其侧重点。

5、UCLA4篇文书总的难度不小，在前期需要进行头脑风暴，好好梳理个人信息和经历，营造个人形象。

总的来说，虽然个人陈述（PS）和目的陈述（SOP）有相同之处，但是在本质上来说还是有较明显的区别。

其实我们只要简单地想一想，为什么很多欧美的院校会要求众多申请者同时提供PS和SOP就很容易就明白了，他们不可能就同一个问题让申请者提交两篇文书来进行陈述吧。
