Why do so many developing countries have elements of the modern world, such as mobile phones, but are not able to produce sufficient food? This global problem of food sustainability and the geographical influences, particularly in relation to Africa, interests me greatly and is the main reason I want to study Geography at degree level and the direction in which I hope to pursue a career.
Although I am not studying Africa specifically in my A level Geography syllabus, I have spent time in South Africa, Tanzania and Nigeria and become aware of Africa’s huge potential for food production. Africa has the soils and sufficient rainfall or sustainable irrigation to be able to grow its own food with many perennial rivers and a large area in the tropical region that has bimodal rainfall patterns which allow two crops a year to be grown with no cost of irrigation. It seems what Africa is lacking is enough farmers interested in food production, especially to the extent of being able to feed a country, infrastructure/capital, management and political will. This enormous potential for commercial food production and processing businesses is extremely exciting and why I want to learn more through a Geography degree. I feel that my other A level choices of Economics and Biology will complement my Geography studies and particular interest in food sustainability.
To develop my knowledge of food sustainability, I have spent several weeks work shadowing with the Production Director of Black Earth Farming in Russia. This company is a large scale agri-business farming 320,000 ha in the black earth region south of Moscow. From this I learnt about the value of fertile soils, effects of a continental climate, economies of scale and the motivation and training of a dwindling agricultural workforce and how perhaps this Russian agricultural revival could be applied to developing countries. In South Africa I have also done work shadowing with Lombardi Foods, a large food processing company employing over 650 people and supplying most of the prepared foods in the Cape for Woolworths. I spent time in each department including procurement, production, warehouse, human resources and finance and realised the potential for expansion of this type of food business throughout Africa as the continent develops. In Tanzania I spent time as a volunteer in an orphanage, doing building work and helping care for the children. This has given me a much greater awareness of the social problems found in many developing countries.
I am a Sports Scholar at school, rowing in the First VIII and playing rugby for the First XV team. I have participated in a Great Britain rowing trial, played rugby for the Dorset and Wilts County squad and spent time with the Bath Rugby Academy Elite Player Development Group. I very much enjoy both these sports that have developed my teamwork skills and I have learnt to manage and prioritise my time efficiently, especially with early morning rowing training, to achieve a reasonable study, sport and social balance. In my spare time I enjoy reading any books about Africa to give me a better understanding of the continent; recent ones include The State of Africa by M.Meredith and Dark Star Safari by P.Theroux. I am a member of the Royal Geographical Society and enjoy reading their magazine. I also play the flute, achieving Grade 5, and play the piccolo for fun. I am a school House Prefect.
Before going to university, I would like to take a gap year to broaden my experience and knowledge of developing countries. I hope to be offered a six months work placement with Dem-Inter, a company who are developing large-scale agri-businesses in Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, DRC, South Africa and Namibia. For the rest of the year I would like to travel to the Far East and South America.
I feel passionately that food sustainability, particularly in developing countries, must be tackled and this is the main reason I want to study Geography at degree level.
